Galvanised Italians overcome Ghana challenge
The Editor — Tue, June 13th 2006
Italy 2 - Ghana 0
An Italian team, united after recent allegations of domestic corruption, stood firm against an athletic Ghanaian team to record a 2-nil victory.
The Italians gave an impressive display and kept their shape well, breaking quickly and with great skill. Ghana were hugely committed but there lack of organisation showed against the world’s masters at playing disciplined football.
Italy showed a more attacking edge than in previous competitions too, bringing Del Piero on as a second half sub, to press for a clinching second goal, when tradionally the Azzurri would be expected to defend their 1-nil lead.
A lack of concentration and organisation un-did the Ghana teams skill and athleticism.
Italy looked organised, skillful and united as a team. Italy last won the World Cup in 1982, ironically just after Serie A had been involved in match fixing claims.
