The Fan adopts a country for June
A quick browse around the internet suggests a few candidates and a few methods for choosing (The BBC has a good list of which English clubs have players in Euro 2008).
To start with we’ve put the 16 countries into categories. The Don’t Like’s is the easiest to start:
Don’t Like
Portugal
France
Netherlands
These inevitably include some of the bigger names
Can’t Like
Croatia
Russia
Spain
Croatia and Russia knocked out England so are ruled out despite a small liking for Croatia (had a great holiday there once…). I cannot bring myself to like Spain whil Aragones is still in charge,
Not interesting enough
Switzerland
Greece
Sweden
Austria
Romania
Poland
Turkey
Frankly, and no disrespect meant, these countries just are not interesting enough. Which leaves, the…
Possibles
Czech Republic
Germany
Italy
Gut feeling wants to go with Italy, but as they are in the Group of Death with two “Can’t Likes”, this puts too much pressure on them to do well. With England not in the tournament I want to try and enjoy it, not suffer a huge crushing disappointment (like usual).
Between the Czech Republic and Germany, for little more reason that sticking a pin in the page, the final decision is to go with:
Germany
Apologies to any Germans for cursing their country’s chances.
Listed in: Competitions, Championship, Euro Championship, Euro 2008
