United fail to stop Rooney’s World Cup chance

Man Utd's lawyers on standby
A powerless Manchester United were unable to stop Wayne Rooney rejoining the England camp in Germany last night as yesterday’s scan did not prove that the player was ‘definitely injured’.
FIFA regulations allow the player’s club to state that a player is injured, but the ultimate decision, after medical tests rest with the country, with FIFA officials stepping in if no agreement can be reached.
Fifa’s regulations meant United could not withdraw their player, as Ferguson would have liked, but it says everything about the club’s position that their first reaction to being told that Rooney’s recovery was ahead of schedule was reportedly to request a second opinion.
David Gill, United’s chief executive offered an indication of what might be to come by instructing the club’s solicitor Maurice Watkins to attend the clinic.

The G-14, whom Manchester Utd are members, are already signed up to a legal challenge on behalf of Belgium club Charleroi who are claiming compensation over an injury to a player while on international duty. If there is any further damage to Rooney’s foot it seems almost certain that Manchester will look for the FA to pay damages.
