Fair play costs West Ham cup?
The Editor — Mon, May 15th 2006
A poor clearance from the returned throw-in fell to Steven Gerrard 35 yards out who thundered in the best FA Cup goal ever to send the tie to extra time.
So did West Ham’s actions lead to the equaliser? Yes, but I’m not sure that putting the ball out for the injured Liverpool player to receive treatment was entirely an altruistic gesture.
Scaloni, who had a good game forcing Liverpool back wide on the right, put the ball out in order to waste as much time as possible. With Liverpool returning the ball from the throw-in, West Ham would have expected the free clearance they received to have been much more effective, and would have expected their team to have regrouped and be better prepared.
It was a cruel twist, but provided the fan with an FA Cup moment to savour.
